Newtown/Brother Smith @ The Burl
August 25, 2017 @ 8:00 pm - 11:30 pm
$10 – $12
NewTown features five artists demonstrating a vast array of acoustic music styling. Based out of Lexington, Kentucky, NewTown accurately cites their obvious local musical influences. The band is able to journey into a realm of their own while still maintaining the spirit of the legendary bluegrass and “Newgrass” sounds created within the walls of Lexington’s Red Slipper Lounge during the mid 70’s.
The band was started by Kati Penn, a talented fiddle player and vocalist from Frankfort, Kentucky. Kati is unique in her ability to lead a band while maintaining the philosophy of a band of equal parts.
Jr Williams complements his wife, Kati, with amazing high harmony and lead vocals along with persistently tasteful banjo and guitar playing.
Together, the band blends their vastly different musical influences to deliver a sound of their own. NewTown creates their sound as a cohesive musical unit with a tangible diversity to which all listeners can relate.
Brother Smith is a young six piece band, native to the Greater Cincinnati/ Northern Kentucky area. Led by Brothers Wes and Aaron Smith, the group has created a unique blend mixing the heart of Country, the creativity of Funk, and the passion of Soul.
Brother Smith’s humble beginning as two brothers with a passion for music quickly grew into a family with desire and ability to convey that same emotion through a larger sound. This organic and soulful approach breathes life into sounds of the yesteryear.
Brother Smith’s influences range from The Eagles, Boston and Steve Miller Band, to James Brown, Stevie Wonder and Kirk Franklin. Brother Smith has also had opportunities to share stages with Sundy Best, Moon Taxi and many more.
