There’s just something about that first warm show of the year. The sun is out, dogwood trees are blooming, and bands are tuning the strings as they embark on Spring tours. Dr. Dog at The Madison Theater in Covington, KY was a fitting band for Dead Audio Blog’s inaugural-Spring show.
Dr. Dog is actually promoting their first album The Psychedelic Swamp on this tour, bringing out new and old fans alike. With equal parts rock, funk and psychedelia, the band played tracks pulled from it’s extensive 70+ song catalogue to an upbeat, celebratory crowd.
The stage is set up kind of like the album cover of The Psychedelic Swamp looks. The backdrop is a white grid on a black background. When illuminated, the grid becomes electric, especially when paired with an impressive lighting rig and disco ball.
The band took the stage a steady build up, beginning with old favorites such as “Holes In My Back” straight into “Fire On My Back,” appeasing veteran fans right off the bat.
Keeping the pace, Dr. Dog roared into some favorites off 2012’s Be the Void like “That Old Black Hole” “Vampires” and “Be the Void”
The show was celebratory and upbeat throughout with some dark, psychadelic jams interspersed between some songs. For instance, the band hit a dark, swampy groove after “Easy Beat” that could have been a show-ender (in a good way), but opted to end with a climactic crowd singalong with “Lonesome”
Be sure to check out Dr. Dog when they visit your town this Spring. If they’re not coming to you, go to them! They’ll be at the Forecastle Festival in Louisville held July 15-17. For more on this great festival, check DAB’s take on the killer lineup!
