This Fall, Dead Audio hosts EXPANSION, Lexington’s Psych Rock Music Festival taking place at Al’s Bar (9/14) and The Burl and The Burl Arcade (9/15). In anticipation, we are shining the spotlight on each performer on the lineup to give you a preview of what you can expect from the festival’s acts. 1 and 2-day passes are on sale now here.

Day One, Locals Night at Al’s Bar – 9/14

EXPANSION will kick things off on Friday, September 14th at Al’s Bar by highlighting some of the best local psychedelic musicians that Lexington has to offer. Headlining Al’s Bar Inside Stage for the evening will be Idiot Glee, the woozy experimental piano project of “post doo-wop” songwriter James Friley. With Idiot Glee, a song that begins with a stoner-pop chorus can give way to psychedelic feedback at a moment’s notice. As his synth arsenal grows, so does Idiot Glee’s restless sonic mayhem, as seen in his Audiotree Live session:

Also holding down the Al’s Bar Inside Stage for the night will be psychedelic rockers Jovontaes who produce heavy jam sessions through space and time. I’ve also heard rumors that Jovontaes will have new music to preview at EXPANSION!

Rounding out that stage for the night is Lexington-based artist and musician, Robert Beatty, who will be performing a DJ set of his favorite tracks. Beatty is also designed the EXPANSION poster, as well as iconic cover art for some of your favorite artists like Tame Impala, Flaming Lips, Thee Oh Sees, Ariel Pink, Idiot Glee and more!

As things get heavy inside, Al’s Outdoor Beer Garden/Patio Stage will host two killer up-and-coming acts: Lexington’s SPACE CAMP and Louisville’s White Knight. SPACE CAMP is a grooving group born in the fifth dimension, who are currently bridging the proverbial gap between Man & Sound with their heavy instrumental brand of psych rock a la Explosions in the Sky and Mogwai.

White Knight will serve as the only non-Lexington act for the night, but after witnessing the the Louisville rockers bring the house down a few weeks ago we knew we needed the boys on board for EXPANSION! White Knight’s hazy, blissed-out sound has been described as “David Bowie making out with the Mars Volta while King Crimson watches.” Here’s a taste of what to expect from the Louisville rockers:

Filling out the bill for night one of EXPANSION at Al’s Bar is a one-off immersive audio/visual experience that will take place at the old Sidecar Bar, adjacent to Al’s. Here, Lexington duo willows., aka Jon Modaff (Guitar) and LouRae Stacy (Vocals) will craft wildly experimental, guitar-heavy and vocal-infused sounds set to audio-reactive projection mapping by Psensibil, the VJ/video wizard behind Sweet Country Meat Boys’ live visuals (SCMB plays the following day of EXPANSION at The Burl).

We all know Lexington is home to some great musicians, creating weird, beautiful and truly unique music. It is Dead Audio’s goal to give these bands a platform to perform, grow and connect with their audience, and night one of EXPANSION at Al’s Bar will provide that platform. Tickets to this show are $8 at the door, or just a $5 add-on when you buy your two-day ticket package at ExpansionLex.com
