Poppy, psychedelic-rock dominated the stage at Cosmic Charlie’s on Friday, January 16th in Lexington. Bowling Green natives, Buffalo Rodeo opened for the rising Jackson, Mississippi outfit The Weeks. Both bands have a couple of albums to their names, however, they both had something to prove that night. The rowdy, attentive crowd provided the perfect backdrop.
Upon taking the stage, Buffalo Rodeo quickly started into a couple jammy non-album tracks, with a smoky, Neil Young sound that transported the room to the 1970s. Half way through the set, “Lana (Del Ray)” allowed the band to easily transition into several tracks off their 2015 album 123 Water. Check out some live footage of the show here and here.
Throughout the set Buffalo Rodeo gave several shoutouts to the city of Lexington, the Wildcats, and MoonTower Festival, and the crowd reciprocated the love, making it apparent that they will be welcomed back soon.
Donning matching vinyl bomber jackets, The Weeks took no time roaring into crowd favorites such as “Buttons,” “Brother in the Night,” and new songs alike, debuting over a half dozen new tunes. Behaving like a possessed, Pentecostal priest, lead singer Cyle Barnes performed like a young Caleb Followill with his eyes rolled back in his head. The crowd went wild as they performed their single “Buttons,” generating an impromptu sing along that seemed to surprise the band.
The Weeks seem to be riding a well-deserved high. After years of solid releases the band stated that 2015 was great for making the best record of their lives. With previous releases including Comeback Cadillac, Gutter Gaunt Gangster, and Dear Bo Jackson it’s hard to imagine it getting much better, keep an eye on these guys. They’ll be on your must-see list soon!
