On Friday, June 3 Cage the Elephant took to the largest stage in their home state, Louisville’s KFC Yum! Arena. It was their first time headlining the venue and with four stellar LPs to their name, the boys from Bowling Green have proved that they are deserving of such a stage. While paying at the Louisville Cardinal’s home court, Cage’s stage donned a #14 UK Basketball jersey, that of 2012’s Michael Kidd-Gilchrist, a nice shout out to their Kentucky roots.
From lead singer Matt Shultz leaping from the stage to the catwalk, to guitarist Brad Shultz jumping into the crowd in the first song, it was apparent the show would be very high energy, as any Cage show is. From start to finish the band never let up, playing heavily from their stellar new album, Tell Me I’m Pretty, sprinkling in fan favorites and singles from previous releases.
As the band rolled through the jams, the crowd kept up with Shultz’s pace, singing along to nearly every song. During the set break, drummer Jared Champion invited his girlfriend on stage to ask her a very important, long overdue question. She said yes and the crowd went wild.
After years of playing the concert and festival circuit, Cage the Elephant has it down to a science, playing songs that their fans have come to love, and showing genuine gratitude towards audiences. They’re doing everything right, and there’s no sign of the band slowing down anytime soon.
